One of the things I like about the Dell (formerly Quest One) Identity Manager is the ease of installation. Installing the Dell Identity Manager is very easy but before you run any setup executables, make sure to review the product documentation for the hardware and software requirements. In my scenario, I am installing DIM on a single server with Oracle 11GR2 as the backend database.

STEP 1: Run autorun.exe from the installation media

STEP 2: If you have not yet reviewed the system requirements, you can do so by going to the System Requirements tab. Otherwise, go in the Components tab and click on the Complete Installation link.

STEP 3: Accept the terms in the license agreement and click Install. Clicking the Advanced button will allow you to specify a custom installation path and choose which components to install.

STEP 4: Installation will begin.

STEP 5: The installation process will finish in about a minute or two. Click Finish and the configuration wizard will start. If you do not want to start the database configuration at this time, simply un-check the “Run Configuration Wizard” box and you can run the Configuration Wizard at a later time.

STEP 6: If you chose to run it, the Configuration Wizard screen will show up. Keep the selection on the “Create and install database” option. Click Next.

STEP 7: Next we will define the administrative connection to the database. Like I said earlier, I will have Oracle 11GR2 as my backend database for DIM so I selected the appropriate option and provided the required information. Note that the user provided must be one with SYSDBA permission. By default, for an Oracle connection, the DIM installer will create the user for whom the Identity Manager schema will be created. After filling up the form, click Next.

STEP 8: On the next screen, you would provide details for the Oracle user for whom the Identity Manager schema will be created. After providing the user information, click Next.

STEP 9: The next screen is just a confirmation screen that shows the product and version information. Click Next.

STEP 10: Next we choose the Configuration Modules that we want to include in the new database. In my case, I want to install the Bundle Edition and I’m only interested on Active Directory as a target at this time. After selecting the options, click Next.

STEP 11: Provide customer data on the next screen, then click Next.

STEP 12: The configuration wizard will begin schema installation. This process can take a while and would be a good time to take a break. The time that this process takes will depend on your system performance. In my case, I left it running and when I came back 90 minutes later, it was done.

STEP 13: When the configuration wizard is done, click Finish.

STEP 14: The Server Service has already been installed on my server during the complete installation. I have no plans to install the server service on any other server on my network so I checked the “Skip service installation” box and clicked Next.

STEP 15: Congratulations! You have successfully installed and configured Dell Identity Manager. Click Finish.
